Round 1 Allotment for Maharashtra Engineering Admissions which were declared last night around 10.00 pm have left many students in a quandary as the average cutoffs for most engineering colleges shot up by 5 marks.

It has been only the second year where the Directorate of Technical Education (DTE) has started the mock allotment concept which is very similar to the other state engineering colleges. The Mock Allotment and Cutoffs do not confirm your admission but it certainly acquaints you to the entire interface and the trend in terms of cutoffs. While the standard notion is to be believed, the cutoffs after the mock allotment generally takes a dip by a couple of marks here and there but this years Round 1 Cutoff has took a 360 degree turn.

Two of the most popular colleges in the city, Fr. Agnel College of Engineering, Bandra and Fr. Agnel Vashi have seen a tremendous jump (around 9 marks) for all its branches as compared to their respective Mock Cutoffs. Agnel Vashi which had mock cutoffs 125, 147 and 137 for IT, Computers and EXTC stream respectively has shot up to an unbelievable 136, 152 and 149 in the same order.

"I secured Fr. Agnel Bandra under the IT stream in Mock Allotment but was stunned to see Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Technology (RGIT), Versova for IT as my CAP Round 1 Allotment. There were atleast 7 options between these two preferences in my final list" says an upset Miloni, who secured 134 in MT CET, to the Stupidsid Reporter.

If reports are to be believed then many students in the range from 130 to 150 have been extremely unsatisfied with their allotment. Moreover, a significant chunk from this range have not secured a seat in any college as they had filled only the best 5 colleges in the city. Agnel Bandra whose cutoffs generally hover around in the early 140's dropped straight to 134 in Mock Round. Students might have analysed their preference in the Mock Round and must have significantly tweaked their list which changed the allotment for other students. Thus, the cutoff shot up to 140 once again.

Another girl (name undisclosed) who scored 147 told the Stupidsid Reporter, "I was alloted Thadomal Shahani College of Engineering (TSEC), Bandra, in the Mock Round but have not been alloted a single option from the list in the First CAP Round. I guess I was over confident that I'll make to it to TSEC after the Mock Allotment and did not include some safer yet better options in the list. I'll now leverage my options on Institute Quota and further CAP Rounds as I do not fall under any Minority Quota".

With the already delayed Admission Process for IITs and NITs which has been the talking point in every engineering aspirant's circle; this latest blow in the increased cutoffs has certainly made lakhs of students cautious about the admissions. Students will have to be very careful while filling up their options for the next round/s.

Students who have secured an allotment in CAP Round 1 and wish to confirm their preference have to report to the respective college on or before June 30 5.00 pm.
